The Slate

Blue Slate

The majority of our work is produced using the very finest Welsh slate. It is mainly sourced from Blaenau Ffestiniog where it has been quarried, sawn into blocks and split by hand. The mud and silt which forms this slate was laid down during Ordovician geological period, approximately 450 million years ago. Welsh slate is renowned for being the best slate in the world and our products made from this slate should last a lifetime.

Green & Purple Slate

We also use some green and purple slate from the Penrhyn quarry in Bethesda, which is an older slate forming around 500 million years ago. This slate is also top quality but is a different colour to the slate quarried in Blaenau Ffestiniog. The greens and purples vary in shade and if you’re very lucky, sometimes it is possible to find beautiful pieces with the mix of the two colours.
